Thailand Bans Recreational Cannabis Sales, Prescription Now Required

Thailand bans cannabis sales without prescription to stop abuse and refocus on medical use under stricter health supervision.

Thailand bans cannabis sales without prescription in a sharp policy shift meant to reduce abuse and protect public health. The government made this move after noticing a surge in unregulated cannabis use, especially among youths and tourists.

Now, the Ministry of Public Health clearly states that cannabis can only be sold with a certified medical prescription. As a result, recreational use is no longer legal. This decision marks a return to stricter cannabis control, focusing only on medical and scientific purposes.

Only licensed dispensaries, clinics, and pharmacies may sell cannabis. These businesses must work directly with certified medical professionals. Authorities have warned that violations will bring serious consequences, including business shutdowns and legal actions.

Thailand made global headlines in 2022 as the first Asian country to legalize cannabis for personal and medical use. However, the sudden rise in cannabis shops and users quickly became a problem. Many experts and parents raised concerns about mental health and public safety.

Therefore, the government decided to act. Officials believe the relaxed cannabis rules created social and psychological risks. They want to reduce these risks before they become harder to manage.

Some business owners oppose the ban. They argue it hurts the fast-growing cannabis economy. But Thai officials remain firm. They believe public safety and responsible use are more important than short-term profits.

Going forward, the country plans to invest in a controlled and research-based cannabis industry. Medical experts, scientists, and healthcare providers will help shape this new direction. By doing this, Thailand hopes to show that cannabis reform must come with strong regulation.
